Master’s Project:

A website designed without words

This project explores whether people can find the right bed and breakfast using only visual communication. Instead of text, users navigate through a series of images and icons that represent different preferences, from urban or natural environments to climate, atmosphere, and style.

The project is based on the idea that visual language can communicate beyond linguistic boundaries, making information accessible regardless of the user's native language.

Challenge

The challenge was to remove language entirely without losing clarity.

Every choice needed to be communicated through imagery alone, requiring careful consideration of symbolism, visual hierarchy, and cultural interpretation. The goal was to create an experience that felt intuitive without instructions or written guidance.

Process

I began by identifying the key factors people consider when choosing accommodation and translating them into visual cues. Through research, sketching, prototyping, and testing, I developed a visual decision-making system that guides users through a personalised journey based entirely on images and icons.

Each interaction was refined to ensure that users could understand and navigate the experience without relying on text.

Result

The final outcome is a fully visual booking experience that removes language as a barrier between users and information.

The project demonstrates how visual communication can become the primary navigation system, creating a more universal and inclusive digital experience.
